You’re absolutely right; a city with 170 different nationalities should be a strength that not only promotes a good integration, but also a strength that attracts global business and culture. While it’s true “ ethnic Københavnere “ need to have education and jobs, the reality has been that regardless of education and ability, this group experiences severe resistance and exclusion on the job market. Though the laws for antidiscrimination are clear, enforcement is certainly lacking, and it appears to be “an accepted norm”.
If any part of this is true, then it indicates a social acceptance and tolerance, for an unacceptable social and intolerant behavior.
“Vuggestuer, børnehaver og skoleklasser skal være blandede både etnisk og socialt.” Absolutely a necessity and essential to any long-term integration. But when we can see that there is substantial social and political resistance to promoting this, and that in itself only increases the difficulty of success and acceptance. If a child is born, educated and raised in Denmark and does not have the same “social status” or employment possibilities as his Danish counterpart, what’s his motivation to assimilate and integrate? How does that child overcome this “inherited negative social status”? How does he become a part of something that appears to reject his participation and demonstrates preferential treatment?

I believe that Copenhagen and Denmark can be a trend setter in demonstrating to the rest of the country as well as other European neighbors, that integration can be successful and strength, instead of a Burdon and endless problem which drains and segregates the society in many ways. A successful integration is possible if the core issues surrounding the problem are clearly outlined, debated, and a focused effort is made to support the possibility of a shift in the social acceptance of a multi cultural society. While there are countless groups dealing with many aspects of the integration issue, there also needs to be a focus team who concentrates on “fixing” the core of the problem.
Though there is adverse political resistance from some parties to find a solution that is empowering and lasting, there are luckily also a great number of the population who are not totally blinded by all the negative press and political rhetoric.
It seems to me that the politician or political partie who is able to make any significant advancement in the intergration process will not only make a difference in many peoples lives, but also be in a very strong position politically…. Two very good reasons to make it work.
